About the Artist
Introducing the ‘Romantic Reveries’ collection from Bristol-born, Cornwall based abstract oil painter Helen Leaver. Loose expressive florals on natural linen in dreamy hues of pinks, claret, ivory and sky blue, these works explore how a cherished event, encounter or emotion can loop round, transporting you back to a special time and place to be remembered and felt time and time again.
Helen paints from her light and tranquil garden studio in the Cornish countryside, a quiet space reflecting her practice which is highly meditative and intuitive. About her process Helen says, “My palette for this series drew from the considered colours of the summer peonies, roses and myrtle in my wedding bouquet. Mindfully observing and painting the petals, leaves and the spaces in between, like a form of embedded muscle memory, the brush feels like it knows where to go. I patiently overlay multiple veils of glazes hinting at what lies beneath as I push and pull at the frayed edges of my consciousness.
Painting, for me is a meditative act, I feel in the present moment when I’m slowly and carefully creating paintings, it leaves me with a sense of gratitude, connected to the part of me that has no beginning or end. I feel that leaving some of the linen untouched in places holds more than an absence, its the space where my breath comes from”.
Repeated organic marks and shapes in translucent shades, allude to how memories can resonate and soften at the edges. Subtle textures offer a gentle tactile quality bringing warmth and intimacy into the home or working space. These fresh floral dreamscapes introduce a sense of tranquillity and uplifting joy, rooted in observation yet open to interpretation.
