BLOC’s We Will Rock You is exactly the kind of show you go to for a fun night out, and this production certainly delivered on that front. Leaning heavily into its cheesy humour, familiar clichés and, of course, Queen’s greatest hits, it never took itself too seriously. The story may not be the show’s strongest element, but when you are there for the music, laughs and a good time, it’s easy to overlook.

There was some amazing young talent throughout the cast, with several standout singers bringing plenty of energy and personality to the stage and showing just how much potential BLOC has. Zoë Garrod as Scaramouche and Jaryd Evans as Galileo particularly blew me away. Garrod made a brilliant impression in Somebody to Love, while the pair were equally impressive in their performance of Under Pressure.

While the cast brought plenty of energy to the show, the production was let down by some technical and staging issues. The sound mixing was inconsistent, with vocals occasionally getting lost, while some lighting cues felt untidy and distracting. The choreography also lacked some polish, with opportunities to make better use of the props and stage feeling somewhat missed. A cleaner, more considered approach to the movement would have elevated the production considerably.

However, these technical shortcomings didn’t stop the audience from having a great time. This show knows exactly what it is: silly, energetic and packed with songs everyone knows. The standout moment came right at the end, when the live band finally took centre stage for a brilliant performance that deservedly earned plenty of applause. Their musicianship was a real highlight and the perfect way to finish the show.

For an amateur production, We Will Rock You is an entertaining night out. It may not have the polish of a professional production, but with talented performers, a brilliant live band and a soundtrack full of songs everyone knows and loves, it delivers exactly what it promises. For Queen fans and anyone looking for a fun evening of big songs and plenty of laughs, it’s definitely worth seeing.
