About the Artist
Rachel Francis is a contemporary artist based in North Somerset, with a studio overlooking the Bristol Channel towards Wales and the Somerset coastline.
Years spent as an Interior Designer have undoubtedly shaped the way she processes and formulates ideas for her paintings, particularly in terms of composition and the use of colour.
The core theme of her work explores her relationship with the surrounding landscape — an emotional response to its drama, beauty, and rhythms. Her paintings evoke long-held memories of the place she calls home, of paths and fields walked many times. Constant immersion in these familiar spaces often triggers the spark for a new piece.
She is fascinated by the places where land, sea, and sky meet, and by the tension and energy that these natural intersections hold. These visual encounters form an ongoing mental library, which she draws upon alongside photographs and sketchbook notes to develop her ideas.
From these starting points, images take shape and gain energy intuitively, revealing themselves through her creative process. Each mark is made in response to the last, in a continual process of simplification and abstraction. Layers are built to create depth and history, then curated and distilled to communicate the feeling and essence of a place — resulting in semi-abstract works rich with texture.
Having lived in the South West and its surrounding areas all her life, she draws deep inspiration from the region. When not in the studio, she can often be found gardening or walking her dog, Hester, along the coast path — an ever-present source of creative influence.
